Meet your Consultant

Welcome! My name is Mack, and I am a Multi. Certified K9 Behavior Consultant. I have over a decade of experience, yet continue to learn something new every day.

I grew up with a huge passion for all animals and nature. I now primarily work with shelter dogs and aid wildlife at a rehab center.

My mission.. to Connect, Heal, and Save animals in need of another chance.

(Im not a big social media person, so things will stay pretty simple here. As I grow, i’m sure so will this platform.)

Behavior Consultant vs a Trainer?

The dog world is unfortunately very unregulated. Not only do you not need any education, not all certifications are reputable. Anyone can all themselves a Trainer or Behaviorist. So how do you know who to look for? Here is a short summery on the different tiles to help guide you and your dog towards the appropriate aid.

Dog Trainer- Teaches new simple skills such as basic manners, tricks, and simple behaviors such as loose leash.

Dog Behavior Consultant-Has further specialized education in behavior modification. For cases involving, reactivity, fear, anxiety, aggression etc.

Dog Behaviorist-Has a MS or BS in Animal Behavior and provides extensive aid for more complex or severe behavior cases. If they also happen to be a Veterinary Behaviorist, they can prescribe behavioral medications and address further medical interventions.

The problem- Many Trainers are taking on cases outside of their scope of practice. Utilizing obedience, and other methods not backed by science, to modify behavior. When we are looking to modify our dog’s behavior, we are aiming to change the emotional response, to help the individual achieve greater welfare. Where as obedience, focuses on control by suppressing emotions. Where science has shown, often leads to further fear, anxiety, and offensive outburst.

Behavior Consultants- Fall somewhere in the middle. We have the knowledge and experience to work with behavior cases and may even work along side a Veterinary Behaviorist. However, we don’t hold a degree for extreme cases who may need further expertise. Nor do we have the ability to prescribe behavior medications. That is then, where we would recommend a Behaviorist/Veterinary Behaviorist we trust.
